The front head rests in the current generation Rav4 are fucking terrible. I swear, I must have concussed myself when I leaned back to rest my head on the drivers side head rest. This is exactly the opposite of what it is supposed to do.

Your right hand is not the same color as your face.

That isn’t a head ‘rest’, it’s a head ‘restraint’. If it’s set up so you can rest your tired head on it, it won’t do the protective job it’s supposed to do in a crash.

http://www.rospa.com/road-safety/ad…

The bit where it sticks out most is supposed to contact the back of your head, not your neck. If you’re doing it right, resting your head on it will be uncomfortable.

Also, Sienna.

And yet, other manufacturers don’t seem to need to kill your neck to accomplish the same thing.

??

How is making it uncomfortable to sit unsafely a bad idea?

That’s not my hand. That’s the hand of... another man. From another place. He makes Youtube videos. That’s what GIS said, anyway.

Adjust the head rest restraint until the top of it is even with your ears. If that does not work, flip the bitch around, if possible. I’ve seen people do it. They are strange, and do not care about whiplash protection.

Active headrests don’t have to be uncomfortable. I leaned back in traffic, and the back of my skull collided with it. In nearly every vehicle I’ve driven with active head restraints, there was soft cushiony padding to rest my head. I have a habit of leaning my head against the headrest when the vehicle is stopped because I’ve been involved in more than one rear-end accident and whiplash injuries ache for like a year afterward.

Can confirm, all modern toyotas have the same awful perma-tilted forward headrests. Who even drives like that?

All I’m saying is:

This is a safety feature which is not exclusive to Toyota. Yet Toyota insists on doing it in a way others don’t and making it very uncomfortable.

Also, (though I never actually said it was a bad idea) since you asked for a reason why it’s a bad idea to make it uncomfortable:

It makes road trips (even relatively short ones) awful. By the time you get out your neck is completely shot. Seriously, as a passenger in our Sienna, if the trip is of any significant length, it’s more comfortable to pull the headrest out and smash your head on the plastic lumps. Tell me that having a comfortable headrest (Ignoring the fact that comfort and safety are not mutually exclusive) is less safe than me removing the damn thing altogether.

Have you seen the average Toyota driver? Their heads never go near the headrest. The steering wheels have tooth marks and are rubbed through the leather at the 11 and 1 o’clock.

It’s probably there more to prevent whiplash than provide rest or comfort.

my oooooooooold e34 and C5 A6 I could tilt them forward and kind of rest my head there perfect. Every other car i’ve been in seems to be like how you described. All for the same obvious reasons everyone has already mentioned

How does that work? You’re not supposed to rest your head on the head restraint in normal driving. By the sound of it you’re corroborating what I said about needing to make them uncomfortable to keep people safe.

“it’s more comfortable to pull the headrest out and smash your head on the plastic lumps”

Eh, well, excluding complete idiocy from the equation, anyway. Sure, it’s more comfortable - and it’s also more comfortable to lie down across the back seat with no seatbelt...

And to repeat, cars do not have headrests . If you’re using the head restraint as a headrest you’re doing it dangerously wrong.

OK, we’ll do it your way. A head restRAINT. Consider “rest” an abbreviation.

How it works is that the Toyota rest’s are completely awful. You can’t avoid resting your head on them as they come WAY TOO FAR FORWARD. As in, much further than what is natural. The whole point of these rest’s is to prevent neck injury, yes? So to prevent you killing your neck in a crash they do it every day instead. I’ll say it again. ALL car manufacturers put in these headrests for purposes of safety. and yet TOYOTA seems to be the ONLY ONE who has to do it this way. SAFETY and COMFORT are NOT mutually exclusive.

And I disagree, by the way—it’s more comfortable to lie down in the back seat WITH a seatbelt, otherwise you just roll around. It’s more comfortable than either simply to stay in your seat.
